Was in penzance in April- seems rundown- local shop owner complained about the council & their installation of "rust buckets" - supposedly flower beds, with rusty metal surroundings- at enormous cost. The “German guy” was Duke Leopold V of Austria. Richard seriously offended him at Acre—traditionally linked to the removal of Leopold’s banner from the city walls. Leopold had Richard captured near Vienna, and he was handed over to Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI.
I agree that Richard’s ransom was a huge burden on his subjects. The demand of 150,000 marks was enormous, and England was heavily taxed. The money came from income and property taxes, church valuables, feudal payments, and more, with Eleanor of Aquitaine overseeing much of the effort. Still, saying Richard “impoverished every peasant” is more inflammatory shorthand than careful history.
After he was released, Richard went back to fighting Philip II of France. But we should remember that Richard wasn’t just an English king fighting pointless foreign wars. Most of the Angevin lands he inherited were in what is now France, and he was defending and trying to recover his family’s territories.
There’s also no real doubt about whether he died from dysentery or an arrow. In 1199 Richard was hit in the shoulder by a crossbow bolt while besieging Châlus-Chabrol. The wound turned gangrenous, likely due to infection, and he died on April 6.
Richard could be ruthless, expensive to maintain, and more focused on crusading and defending his continental lands than on actually governing England. His order to execute thousands of Muslim prisoners after Acre is a real and serious accusation against him—and, interestingly, one your account didn’t mention.
So there’s plenty of room to criticize Richard without downplaying his military record or mixing up the timeline. The conversion story seems to be reversed, Joanna’s refusal didn’t cause his departure, and the idea of him rampaging homeward confuses different parts of his journey.
That said, Julia, you clearly know a lot about Richard’s reign, and I appreciate you pointing out the less romantic side of his reputation. I just don’t agree with how you’ve interpreted several of these events.

I've also thought about how to get the most out of what I can offer, and it isn't by being one more pair of hands. It's in getting myself and the people immediately around me to a position where none of this can reach us, and where in ten years I've got something worth contributing rather than a few hours here and there as a side hobby.
What I can do from here is think about it properly, which is what the post was. It's a discussion about what tends to work and what doesn't, nothing more than that.

Was in penzance in April- seems rundown- local shop owner complained about the council & their installation of "rust buckets" - supposedly flower beds, with rusty metal surroundings- at enormous cost. Disappointing - ripe I'm sure for a government investment in imported vagrant infrastructure with the usual plethora of welfare hunter gatherers from afar.
I can believe it. We moved from Penzance to a village in Berkshire in 1979 and in that short time the signs of slippage were evident and last year my wife and I together with our daughter were sad to see the deterioration of what once was a lovely place to live.
Also complained about business rates. The small health shop was hit with a bill of £6,000 - through numerous procedures & appeals got it down to £2,000. Even on a weekend shopping day I wss the only person in the space of a half hour to do business -mind U just spending £3.
Desperate isn’t a word I often use, but those shop owners must be on their knees. And it’s these very same small businesses that the Fabians believe are the cash cows to be milked!
